Access to Highways

Ground transportation in Pennsylvania is both accessible and uncongested. Our region’s main arteries are Interstate 80, which connects our region to both the east and west coast, and US Routes 11 and 15, which carry traffic north and south. Interstate I-99 runs from the southwest, through the center of our region and to the north--making travel smooth and virtually congestion free.

Rail Transportation

Connections to Class One railroads, including Norfolk Southern and Canadian Pacific Rail, make rail shipments an affordable and convenient means of transportation in Central Pennsylvania. An extensive rail freight network, including nearly 200 miles of rail lines owned by the SEDA-COG Joint Rail Authority, assures maximum flexibility and first-class short-line service for your product shipments.

Air Transportation

Central Pennsylvania’s transportation network also includes commercial air service with links to Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. International airport service is available within an hour of the region and numerous general aviation airports can be found nearby.

Roadway Improvement Projects

Information on current and future highway improvement projects in our region can be found through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation District 3's web site and on the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation District 2's web site.

Current road infrastructure improvement projects:
  • The Central Susquehanna Transportation Project is bringing an alternative route, adding another Susquehanna River crossing and upgrading Route 15 to limited access for another 12 miles in Central Pennsylvania.
  • The Susquehanna Beltway is increasing access to the west of Williamsport. The widening of Routes 11-15 for 10.1 miles to a four-lane limited access road is creating better north-south access for our region.
  • The new Market Street Bridge Project in Williamsport has been completed and carries Route 15 over the Susquehanna River between the City of Williamsport and Borough of South Williamsport. The single point urban interchange (SPUI) serves as a direct tie-in between Route 15 and Interstate 180.
  • The Route 22/Northern Lewistown Bypass Project is completed adding nearly 12 miles of highway and ramps in Mifflin County, including the new Electric Avenue interchange for Routes 22/522 and 322.

Many national and independent trucking companies operate truck load (TL) and less than truck load (LTL) businesses from our region. Companies receiving materials and supplies as well as shipping finished products on to their customers are well served by area trucking firms.
